Most small business owners have asked themselves some version of this: what can I actually get for $100 a month in marketing? It is a fair question. When you are covering payroll, rent and supplies, $100 is a real number, and you want to know it will do something.
The honest answer is that $100 a month buys you a professional presence, not growth. It can make sure that when someone finds you, you look like a business worth calling. It cannot, on its own, make more people find you. That takes a bigger budget, and below we cover what changes at $999 a month and how much traffic you can realistically expect.
If you want the general market rates for SEO, our playbook chapter on what marketing should actually cost covers them. This post is narrower: what a small budget really buys, and how to pick the right plan.
What $100 a month can buy
Here is where $100 goes in practice for a local business:
| Option | Roughly what it costs | What you get | What you do yourself |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Business Profile | Free | Your listing on Google Maps and Search | Everything: setup, photos, posts, review replies |
| DIY website builder | About $15–$50/mo | A template site and hosting | Design, writing, updates, SEO basics |
| Done-for-you one-page site | $99/mo + $10 hosting (our Basic plan) | A professional page with tap-to-call, a contact form and basic SEO, live in 7 days | Send your details and photos once |
| $100 in search ads | $100 in ad spend | A few dozen clicks at most in many local service categories | Setup and management, or pay someone extra |
Notice the last row. $100 of ad spend runs out quickly, and that is before anyone is paid to manage the campaign. For most service businesses, a small ad budget gets spent before it can teach you anything.
What $100 a month will not buy
SEO. Ranking in Google for your services takes research, page improvements, content, Google Business Profile work and monthly tracking. At $100 a month an agency can give your account an hour or two. That is not enough time to do any of those properly, which is why packages at that price are usually automated reports with your logo on them.
Social media management. Planning, designing, writing and posting for even one channel takes several hours a month. Cheap packages tend to post generic stock content that does not bring in customers.
Ad management. The platforms take your ad spend. Someone still has to write the ads, choose the keywords, and remove the searches that waste money. That work costs more than $100 on its own.
None of this means a small budget is wasted. It means the money should go to the things that work without ongoing hours.
The best way to spend $100 a month
If $100 is your budget today, put it here, in this order:
- Claim and complete your Google Business Profile. It is free and it is where most local customers find you first. Our Google Business Profile guide walks through it step by step, and Google’s own Business Profile help covers the setup.
- Ask every happy customer for a review. Reviews are the cheapest trust signal you can build, and they help you show up in Maps. Here is how to get more of them without being awkward about it.
- Get a website that looks professional. When someone finds you on Maps, the next thing they do is tap through to your site. A clean page with your services, reviews, hours and a tap-to-call button is enough to start. If you do not have the time to build one, our Basic plan does it for $99 a month plus $10 hosting.
That combination will not put you at the top of Google, but it makes sure you do not lose the customers who already find you.
What changes at $999 a month
At $999 a month the work stops being about looking professional and starts being about getting found by people who have never heard of you. Here is what our Growth plan includes each month:
- A custom website, hosting and maintenance
- Google Business Profile management, with 4 posts a month
- 2 blog posts a month, written to answer what your customers search for
- 2 brand-consistent creative designs a month
- Yelp management
- SEO on up to 20 target keywords, covering a full list of services or several cities
The difference is time and focus. A $999 plan pays for someone to work on your search visibility every week, not just set it up once.
Can you expect traffic on a $999 plan?
Yes, more search visibility is the goal, and it should show up in your numbers. But anyone who promises you a specific traffic number before looking at your market is guessing. How fast you grow depends on:
- Your competition. A dentist in a dense city faces more competition than a pool service in a quieter area.
- Your starting point. A new website with no reviews starts further back than an established business with an old site.
- Search demand. Some services are searched thousands of times a month in your area, others a few dozen times.
- Consistency. SEO compounds. Stopping after three months throws away most of the early work.
A realistic timeline looks like this:
| Months | What is happening | What you should see |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | Website, Google profile, tracking and keyword plan set up | Cleaner profile, faster site, a baseline to measure against |
| 3–6 | Content published, pages improved, local signals built | Impressions rising first, then clicks and calls |
| 6–12 | Work compounds across more keywords | Steadier rankings and more calls and requests from people who did not know you |
One example from our own work. For Acorn Family Dental Care in Berkeley, a rebuilt website plus local SEO and content took Google Search clicks from 307 to 853 in a three-month comparison, and moved the average position from 10.6 to 7.6, from page 2 onto page 1. The full case study shows the Search Console data. That is one client’s result, not a forecast for yours.
What matters more than traffic is what traffic turns into. Watch three numbers each month: clicks in Google Search Console, calls and direction requests from your Google Business Profile, and the enquiries you actually receive. Our playbook chapter on your first 90 days explains what good progress looks like and when to ask questions.
How to pick the right plan
Match the plan to where your business is now, not where you hope it will be in two years:
| Your situation | Plan | Monthly |
|---|---|---|
| Just starting, or you only need to be online | Basic | $99 + $10 hosting |
| You want a custom website that can rank later | Starter | $299 |
| One city, a few core services, ready to start local SEO | Essential | $599 |
| Several services or several cities, real competition | Growth | $999 |
| You want to show up in ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews too | Professional | $1,499 |
| A crowded market where competitor research drives the plan | Elite | $1,999 |
Every plan is month to month with no setup fee, so you can start small and move up when the numbers say it is working. If you want a number for your own situation, the marketing cost calculator works it out from four questions and shows what each plan does not include.
